Uniquely Crafted Reference Book Revives the Art of Film Photography

Andrew Bellamy, the author, designer, and illustrator of Analogue Photography, has created a unique project that stands out from other reference books. The book is not only written by Bellamy but also designed and illustrated by him, featuring a bespoke typeface—35-FTR—created specifically for this project. This typeface reflects the style of the period and optimizes typesetting and readability, adding to the book's vintage appeal.

The book is a perfect bound, 192-page guide with a hot foil on textured card for the cover and uncoated ivory paper for the pages. Measuring 16cm x 21cm x 2cm, it is a portable reference tool filled with diagrams, examples, and illustrations. It provides comprehensive information on the fundamentals of photography, the essential parts and mechanics of various types of 35mm camera, and types of film processing.

Analogue Photography features two unique interactive elements inspired by digital media. Key terms that are relevant to—or explained in—another section of the book are underlined and listed in a cross-reference section with the relevant page number. This allows for easy and quick referencing and non-linear reading. Additionally, progress bars at the bottom of each page show how far the reader is through the chapter and the book.

The project started in Miami in 2010 as the website ilottvintage.com and was finished as a book in New York in 2016. The publishers of the European edition published in 2017 are based in Rome and Berlin. A German and Spanish translation and an American edition will be available at the end of 2018. The book is available online and in stores worldwide.

Analogue Photography was awarded Silver in A' Print and Published Media Design Award in 2019.
